New LLMs in Corporate Governance, Dispute Resolution, and Islamic Finance Launched by Villa College

Villa College has announced the introduction of three new Master of Laws (LLM) programmes aimed at preparing professionals for specialised roles in the legal sector. The new programmes focus on Corporate Governance, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Islamic Finance, reflecting growing demand for expertise in these areas within the Maldives and beyond.

The launch was officiated by Dr Ali Najeeb, Vice Rector of Villa College and Dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law, alongside Uza. Asna Ahmed. The programmes, accredited by the Maldives Qualifications Authority and the Bar Council of the Maldives, are designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills for legal practitioners and are delivered fully online to ensure accessibility for working professionals across the country.

The LLM in Corporate Governance will cover subjects such as Transnational Corporate & Capital Markets Law, International Commercial Law, and Principles and Practices of Corporate Governance. The course is structured to strengthen the expertise of legal professionals in corporate law and compliance, aligning with the needs of the business sector.

The LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution offers training in negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, preparing graduates for careers in resolving disputes outside traditional courts. Modules include Negotiation and Mediation, International Dispute Settlement, and Public International Law.

The LLM in Islamic Finance introduces a distinctive element with micro-credential modules, enabling students to gain internationally recognised professional certifications. Covering areas such as Shariah aspects of business, Islamic banking practices, and risk management, the programme is intended to produce specialists equipped for the expanding Islamic finance industry.

Villa College’s Faculty of Shariah and Law is known for its emphasis on practical experience, with students gaining exposure through initiatives such as Street Law, Legal Aid Clinics, judge residencies, and advocacy competitions.

Applications for the September 2025 intake are now open, with a deadline of 3 September.
