New VIA Terminal to Open Before October

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be opened before October, marking a key milestone in the Maldives’ aviation expansion. Speaking at the opening of parliament last Thursday, the president highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s air transport system to support tourism and economic growth.

The new VIA terminal, a long-awaited project, was initially planned to open in phases, with partial operations expected during last year’s peak tourism season. However, based on recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), the government has opted to complete the entire terminal before its official opening.

With a design capacity of 7 million passengers annually, the terminal is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve passenger experience at the country’s primary international gateway. VIA currently handles far beyond its intended capacity, and the new facility will address longstanding infrastructure challenges while strengthening the Maldives’ connectivity to global markets.

Beyond VIA, President Muizzu also reaffirmed plans to complete and open Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Addu Gan Airport within the year, with both projects being developed with financing from the Exim Bank of India. Additionally, domestic airport development is underway across several atolls to enhance inter-island travel and economic opportunities.

The government’s push to expand and modernise the Maldives’ aviation network aligns with its broader strategy to accommodate growing tourist arrivals and support economic development. With the new VIA terminal nearing completion, the Maldives is set to further solidify its status as a premier travel destination.
