Ooredoo: The Pacemaker of Maldivian Telecom Industry

Ooredoo Maldives is marking its 20th anniversary with a series of new offerings and celebratory events that reflect the company’s continued role in shaping the country’s digital future. From pioneering mobile services to investing in community-driven initiatives, the telecom provider has outlined a vision that blends cutting-edge technology with social engagement.

Launched as the first provider of 3G, 4G, and later 5G AirFibre broadband in the Maldives, Ooredoo’s growth has been driven by innovation. The company has connected the entire archipelago through a nationwide 4G+ network using submarine cable, and established high-standard infrastructure such as its Tier 3 Data Centre in Hulhumalé and a regional facility in Kulhudhuffushi.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Ooredoo is introducing a series of promotions under the theme “Live Unlimited”. One of the standout announcements is a customer giveaway of 19 Umrah trips, with one winner every 20 days, and a grand prize of a Hajj trip for two, as a thank-you for two decades of loyalty.

Adding to the list of technological firsts, Ooredoo has launched Apple Watch Cellular Service via eSIM — the first in the Maldives and third in the Ooredoo Group to offer it. For the next six months, mobile customers will be able to access the service free of charge, after which it will be available for MVR 199 per month.

Ooredoo also introduced a new smart home bundle for its SuperNet customers, combining broadband with smart devices such as security cameras and video doorbells, with plans to expand the range in the near future.

Community events continue to be a hallmark of the company’s anniversary plans. The annual Fun Run will be hosted in Hulhumalé in December and in Addu City on 27 June. The popular Masrace competition will be held across three regions, with island councils invited to express interest in hosting additional legs.

Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to local talent, Ooredoo has announced Rashid Adam — known by his social media handle “The Life of a Fisherman” — as its new brand ambassador. Rashid, a pole-and-line fisherman from Fares-Maathoda, has garnered a strong following through his documentation of traditional fishing methods.

“We believe in doing new things, crazy ideas, and setting the pace,” the company said, hinting at a special project currently underway to promote the Maldives internationally.

While the telecom landscape continues to evolve rapidly, Ooredoo’s message is clear: the journey over the past 20 years is just the beginning. With a strong foundation in place and a stream of new services lined up, the company aims to continue building a truly digital Maldives where users can, in its own words, “Live Unlimited.”
