Maldives Immigration has launched its largest enforcement operation to date in Addu City, under a campaign titled Operation Hamamagu. The effort, which began today, aims to regularise undocumented migrants and crack down on illegal employment practices across the city.
According to officials, 35 officers from the Enforcement and Compliance Division, along with personnel from the Addu Immigration Office, are involved in the operation. The task is being led by the Immigration Task Force and will continue throughout the day, covering all districts of Addu from morning until sunset.
The primary focus of the operation is on expatriates working without valid documentation. Immigration has confirmed that individuals found in violation of immigration regulations will be detained and transported to the immigration detention centre in Malé. Repatriation procedures will follow for those who do not meet legal requirements to remain in the country.
Authorities also stated that Maldivians employing undocumented migrants will be formally notified of their violations. This step is part of a broader effort to address irregularities in both employment and residency.
Immigration officials described Operation Hamamagu as part of a larger, ongoing strategy to tackle illegal immigration nationwide. Similar enforcement actions are expected to be launched in other parts of the Maldives in the near future.
The operation signals the government’s renewed commitment to enforcing immigration laws and safeguarding the country’s labour and residency systems.
