Parliament has approved the appointment of Aishath Asna Hamdi as the new Deputy Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), following the resignation of her predecessor Ahmed Imad earlier this year. The confirmation was made during Monday’s sitting, with 73 members voting unanimously in favour.
Asna’s appointment was forwarded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu late last month after Imad stepped down in March. His resignation came ahead of a parliamentary motion seeking his dismissal, linked to allegations regarding his failure to report governance issues involving former Governor Ali Hashim.
Asna was vetted by the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, which reviewed her qualifications and experience before recommending her appointment. She has worked at the MMA since 2008 and currently heads the Financial Institution Development Department, a role she assumed following organisational changes introduced by Governor Ahmed Munawwar in late 2023.
She holds a Master’s degree in Business Finance from the University of Nottingham and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of East London. With over 15 years of experience at the central bank, Asna’s appointment marks a continuation of leadership transition at the MMA under the current administration.
