Parliament Confirms Dr Aishath Rameela as HRCM President

Parliament has approved Dr Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), with 38 MPs endorsing her nomination submitted by President Mohamed Muizzu.

Dr Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 3 December 2025, following the completion of former commissioner Mariyam Muna’s term, and was subsequently nominated to lead the independent constitutional body, subject to parliamentary approval.

A senior public servant, Dr Rameela previously served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration, resigning from the post in December 2024 for health reasons.

The HRCM currently comprises five members, including Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood and commissioners Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom. The commission is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights in the Maldives and advising the government on compliance with international human rights obligations.
