Power Generation Capacity Boost Planned Ahead of Ramadan

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun preparatory works to strengthen electricity generation capacity across the Maldives ahead of the annual peak season for power consumption.

The initiative includes the delivery and installation of 12 generator sets to islands nationwide, aimed at ensuring a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply during periods of heightened demand. The work has commenced in advance of the holy month of Ramadan, when household electricity consumption typically increases.

In a statement shared on social media, State Electric Company Limited said it undertakes targeted readiness programmes each year to prepare for peak usage periods, and confirmed that preparations for this year are already underway.

According to the company, generator sets with capacities of 600 kilowatts and 1,000 kilowatts have been procured for delivery to islands. Each of the 12 identified islands will receive one generator, with the aim of improving island level generation capacity and strengthening system resilience.

STELCO said installation and commissioning of all units will be completed before the start of Ramadan, adding that the work is intended to support reliable service delivery and reinforce public confidence in the electricity supply.

Separately, the company has also commissioned and brought into operation a 1,200 kilowatt generator set in Vilimalé’, further increasing generation capacity in the Greater Malé’ region. STELCO noted that the additional capacity is expected to improve supply stability and provide greater assurance to households on service continuity.
