President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled two new tourism initiatives aimed at diversifying the Maldives’ visitor economy: opening underdeveloped atolls to tourism and designating islands exclusively for halal tourism.
In a post shared on social media platform X, the President announced that tourism is now open to Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu atolls. These areas have historically seen limited resort development. The move reflects a campaign pledge to promote more balanced regional development across the country.
To support tourism expansion in these atolls, the government plans to offer concessions to interested investors and invest in road infrastructure, transport connectivity, and essential public services. The initiative is expected to boost employment and stimulate regional economic activity.
Separately, President Muizzu confirmed that the government has designated several islands for the exclusive development of halal tourism. He said the Maldives aims to become a global benchmark in this growing market, combining its reputation for sustainability and hospitality with offerings tailored for halal-conscious travellers.
The halal tourism initiative will include significant incentives for investors, with further details set to be released by the Ministry of Tourism in the coming week. The President emphasised that the Maldives remains open to investment from around the world.
Tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy, and the latest initiatives indicate a strategic push to broaden its reach and deepen its diversity.
