President Marks World Tourism Day with Focus on Sustainability and Innovation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, in a statement marking World Tourism Day, reflected on the Maldives’ tourism industry and its future direction, underlining the importance of sustainability, inclusivity and innovation.

The President noted that the Maldives’ position as a global leader in tourism and hospitality is rooted in the vision of its early pioneers. He said this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” resonated with the country’s current priorities of promoting growth while ensuring the industry supports broader social and environmental goals.

In his remarks, he pointed to efforts to expand tourism beyond the traditional hubs into less-engaged atolls and into new areas such as halal tourism. He also referenced ongoing infrastructure projects, including the new international terminal at Velana International Airport, which he said were intended to support the long-term growth of the sector.

The President expressed appreciation for those employed in the industry, stating that their contribution continues to define the Maldivian tourism experience.

World Tourism Day is observed globally on 27 September, with this year’s theme focusing on sustainability and transformation in the tourism industry.
