President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed on Friday for an official visit to the People’s Republic of China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, where he will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
During the visit, President Muizzu is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with President Xi and other foreign leaders. His agenda also includes attending a series of high-level engagements connected to the summit.
The President will address the SCO Plus meeting, where he is expected to highlight the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic fragmentation, and geopolitical tensions.
The SCO, formed in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, has since expanded into the world’s largest regional organisation by geographic scope and population. It now counts 10 member states, with additional observers and dialogue partners. The Maldives holds the status of dialogue partner.
