President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres this afternoon on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting focused on the Maldives’ commitment to playing a more active role within the UN system and addressing critical issues impacting Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
During the meeting, President Muizzu highlighted the Maldives’ dedication to contributing more robustly to UN discussions, particularly on matters affecting SIDS. He also briefed Secretary-General Guterres on the fiscal challenges currently facing the Maldives, noting that his government is working on a fiscal reform agenda aimed at reducing national debt and achieving sustainable fiscal conditions. The President emphasised the importance of receiving support from both bilateral and multilateral partners in implementing these reforms.
In response, Secretary-General Guterres praised the Maldives for its ongoing efforts in addressing global issues, particularly its proactive stance on climate change adaptation. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the Maldives in its adaptation initiatives and in overcoming other pressing challenges that the country faces.
President Muizzu concluded the meeting by expressing his gratitude to the Secretary-General for his leadership and for the opportunities the UN provides to member states in tackling global concerns.
The meeting highlighted the Maldives’ desire to strengthen its engagement with the UN and advance its global position, while also addressing the significant financial hurdles it faces as a Small Island Developing State.
The Maldives’ relationship with the United Nations dates back to 1965 when it became a member just months after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. Since then, the country has become a staunch supporter of the multilateral system, advocating for small island nations and raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable nations like itself.
The Maldives’ presidency of the UN General Assembly in 2021 further strengthened its global diplomatic standing, allowing the nation to influence discussions on issues such as sustainable development, ocean conservation, and climate action.
