On the third day of his official visit to Estonia, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu engaged in a series of activities in Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city, highlighting education, research, and cultural opportunities for future collaboration.
Exploring Academia at the University of Tartu
President Muizzu visited the University of Tartu, a prestigious institution ranked among the top 1 per cent globally in research. Accompanied by the university’s Rector, Professor Toomas Asser, the President toured its facilities and learned about its expertise in genomics, computer science, and material sciences. During the discussions, the President emphasised the importance of creating pathways for Maldivian students to study at the university, particularly in fields such as medicine, digitalisation, and climate sciences.
The President also explored opportunities to integrate the university’s research into public services and digital infrastructure in the Maldives, aligning with his administration’s goals for digital transformation. University officials welcomed the possibility of collaboration and shared information about scholarships available for international students.
Innovations at the Estonian Biobank
The President visited the Estonian Biobank, a leading research institution housing data from over 200,000 participants. Guided by Professor Lili Milani, Head of the Biobank, President Muizzu was briefed on its pharmacogenomics research and its role in personalised medicine. He expressed interest in exploring partnerships that could benefit healthcare research and development in the Maldives.
Cultural Insights at the Estonian National Museum
The day concluded with a visit to the Estonian National Museum, where President Muizzu was welcomed by its Director, Dr Kertu Saks. Touring the “Encounters” exhibition, the President gained insight into Estonia’s cultural heritage and its journey toward modernity. The visit underscored the importance of fostering cultural exchanges between the two nations.
President Muizzu expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality received in Tartu and his admiration for the city’s blend of academic excellence and cultural vibrancy. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening ties between the Maldives and Estonia, particularly in education, research, and sustainable development.
This visit forms part of the President’s broader official trip to Estonia at the invitation of President Dr Alar Karis, accompanied by a high-level Maldivian delegation.
