President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to India on the occasion of its Independence Day, highlighting the close bond between the two neighbours as they mark six decades of diplomatic relations this year.
In a message shared on X, the President conveyed best wishes to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the people of India, describing the country as a trusted development partner of the Maldives. He noted that the growing frequency of high-level exchanges and people-to-people contact reflects the strength of cooperation that has developed over the years.
The Maldives and India formally established diplomatic relations in 1965, a partnership that has since evolved across multiple sectors. India has been a longstanding contributor to infrastructure, health, education, and security in the Maldives, while cultural and social ties between the two nations have deepened through decades of exchanges.
This year’s milestone provides both countries with an opportunity to reflect on a relationship that has grown in significance, particularly as regional cooperation gains renewed attention. For the Maldives, India remains one of its most important partners in development and diplomacy, a connection that continues to shape the nation’s role in the wider Indian Ocean.
