President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his heartfelt felicitations to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India’s Republic Day. In separate letters addressed to the two leaders, President Muizzu conveyed his warmest greetings and best wishes on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives.
In his messages, President Muizzu highlighted the longstanding and robust partnership between the Maldives and India, describing it as a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and understanding. He emphasised the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to working closely with India to strengthen their strategic ties and address common challenges on both bilateral and global platforms.
The Maldives-India relationship is often hailed as one of the most significant diplomatic partnerships for both nations. India has played a crucial role in supporting the Maldives’ development through infrastructure projects, health initiatives, and financial assistance. Key agreements between the two countries include cooperation in defence, trade, and disaster management, underscoring their shared priorities in regional security and economic stability.
India has also been a reliable partner during times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic, when it provided vaccines and essential supplies to the Maldives. The two nations have a history of close collaboration through multilateral forums such as SAARC, with India often serving as a vital economic and political ally to the Maldives.
President Muizzu, in his letters, reaffirmed the importance of this partnership and expressed his wishes for the continued peace, prosperity, and well-being of the Indian people. He also extended his best wishes for the good health of President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi.
India celebrates its Republic Day annually on January 26th, commemorating the adoption of its Constitution. Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India were formally established on July 26, 1965, and the bond has since grown stronger through decades of cooperation and shared values.
In addition to his formal letters, President Muizzu shared a message on his official ‘X’ account, reiterating his congratulations and warm wishes to India on this significant occasion.
