President Muizzu Inaugurates Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll today. Although the government initially planned to open the airport on the 1st of this month, the ceremony was delayed.

The opening of Muli Airport fulfils a key pledge of President Muizzu’s administration. Developed under a Presidential Decree, the airport forms part of a broader initiative to ensure that every inhabited island lies within 30 minutes of an airport, improving accessibility and enhancing transport convenience across the Maldives. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Muizzu highlighted the long history of the project.

“Muli’s airport has been under construction for a considerable period. As the Minister mentioned, it has been 14 years since the project commenced,” he said.

He noted that when this administration assumed office, a significant amount of work remained in this project. President Muizzu said the government increased the project budget by over MVR 100 million to accommodate necessary variations and bring the project to completion.

President Muizzu described Muli Airport as a gateway to the island’s development, particularly in boosting economic growth. He emphasised that the airport would open doors for progress across various sectors.

Addressing the residents of Muli, the President outlined several other development projects planned for the island. He announced that road development works would begin next year. He also confirmed that the upgrade of the island’s regional hospital has already been contracted and will commence soon.

In addition, he spoke about the government’s plan to build 300 housing units on the island. The project is currently in the tendering stage, and construction will proceed once a contractor is appointed.

As part of his one-day trip to Meemu Atoll, President Muizzu is set to inaugurate the construction of the Muli–Naalaafushi Island Causeway. He met with members of the Island Councils and Women’s Development Committees of both islands during the visit.
