During a key event held as part of his state visit to India, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the strong bond between the Maldives and India, particularly in the areas of tourism and trade. Addressing business leaders and ministers at the Tourism and Trade Promotion event in Mumbai, President Muizzu underscored the growing ties between the two nations and highlighted opportunities for further collaboration.
“Tourism is not just about travel—it is about building bridges, fostering cultural understanding, and promoting peaceful coexistence among nations,” said President Muizzu, as he reflected on the mutual benefits that both countries can achieve through tourism. He noted that nearly 100,000 Indian visitors have visited the Maldives this year, marking India as one of the top source markets for the island nation.
President Muizzu also highlighted the Maldives’ prestigious status as the World’s Leading Destination for four consecutive years, emphasising that Indian travellers play a significant role in the country’s tourism success. “For many Indian travellers, the Maldives has become not just a destination, but a haven where they can unwind, recharge, and create cherished memories.”
Looking forward, President Muizzu expressed optimism about diversifying the tourism sector with niche segments such as ecotourism, wellness tourism, and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. He also encouraged the Bollywood industry to consider the Maldives for film tourism, leveraging the nation’s natural beauty as a backdrop for film productions.
The president highlighted the ongoing expansion of key infrastructure projects, including Velana International Airport and Hanimaadhoo International Airport, both of which are set to be completed by next year. These upgrades are expected to enhance the travel experience and solidify the Maldives as a leading travel hub in the region.
For investors, President Muizzu pointed out the range of opportunities available in the Maldives, particularly in luxury private island developments, eco-friendly resorts, and integrated tourism projects. He noted the introduction of special economic zones and a recently passed Foreign Investment Act, both aimed at facilitating foreign investment. “Whether it is developing luxury private islands, eco-friendly resorts, or integrated tourism projects, the Maldives offers a wealth of opportunities aligned with our vision of diversification and sustainable growth.”
The president further outlined plans for regional development, highlighting the goal to add 6,000 new beds in Addu City and more than 10,000 beds in Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu in the next five years. He described the northern region, with the new Hanimaadhoo International Airport, as a key area for future tourism growth.
President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to sustainability, noting the importance of combating climate change and promoting responsible tourism. “Sustainability lies at the core of our vision for the future. By uplifting communities and protecting fragile ecosystems, we aim to create a model where tourism, community well-being, and conservation coexist in harmony.”
In concluding his remarks, President Muizzu expressed confidence in the future of Maldives-India relations, stating that increased cooperation in tourism, investment, and community engagement will pave the way for a prosperous future for both nations. “Together, we can create opportunities that drive economic prosperity, uplift our island communities, and make tourism a true vehicle for positive change.”
The event, part of President Muizzu’s official state visit to India, marks another step towards enhancing the already strong relationship between the Maldives and India in the fields of tourism and trade.
