
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described Sri Lanka as a close and trusted partner of the Maldives, highlighting the country’s resilience and the depth of bilateral ties in messages sent to Sri Lankan leaders on the occasion of the country’s 78th Independence Day.
In separate letters addressed to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, President Muizzu referred to Sri Lanka’s continued efforts towards economic stability, social harmony, and national progress. He noted that the milestone comes at a time when Sri Lanka is demonstrating resolve in navigating ongoing challenges, while also pointing to decades of cooperation and shared regional priorities that have shaped relations between the two countries.
In his communication with the Prime Minister, the President expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would continue to deepen, particularly in areas such as trade, development, and regional stability. He also conveyed personal best wishes to both leaders and extended his hopes for the continued peace and prosperity of the Sri Lankan people.
Separately, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel also sent a letter of felicitations to Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath. In his message, Minister Khaleel described Sri Lanka as holding a special place for Maldivians, citing long standing historical ties and close cooperation between the two neighbours.
The Foreign Minister acknowledged Sri Lanka’s contribution to Maldives’ development over the years, particularly in education, healthcare, tourism, and workforce development. He reaffirmed his confidence that the spirit of goodwill between the two countries would continue to support new areas of collaboration, while expressing his commitment to working closely with his Sri Lankan counterpart to advance shared interests.
Sri Lanka marks Independence Day annually on 4 February, commemorating its independence from British colonial rule in 1948.
