President Muizzu Pledges to Ratify Asset Recovery Bill and Pursue Corruption Cases

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said his administration is committed to addressing corruption and pledged to ratify the Asset Recovery Bill once it is passed by Parliament.

Speaking to residents of Th. Thimarafushi on Friday evening, the President stated that government agencies would begin pursuing cases of large-scale theft and corruption as soon as the legislation comes into effect. He noted that the Bill is intended to tackle long-standing challenges in reclaiming funds from individuals implicated in corruption cases investigated in recent years.

The President also referred to wider anti-corruption efforts, pointing to the Maldives 2.0 digitalisation project as an initiative aimed at strengthening governance and closing off opportunities for malpractice. He stressed that his government would not influence the judiciary or independent institutions, adding that their independence was essential to the system. At the same time, he called on the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Prosecutor General’s Office to expedite their work.

Citing the Auditor General’s report on the misappropriation of MVR 2.2 billion at Fenaka Corporation Limited, the President described the case as regrettable and confirmed that police investigations are under way.

He said accountability would apply to all individuals involved in corruption and that investigations and proceedings would be carried out with fairness.
