On the occasion of International Day of Clean Energy, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to advancing renewable energy and transitioning to sustainable energy systems. In a message shared to mark the day, the President highlighted the country’s ambitious goals and underscored the importance of collective action to combat climate change.
International Day of Clean Energy is a global observance that focuses on the adoption of clean energy solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. For the Maldives, a low-lying island nation vulnerable to rising sea levels, the transition to clean energy is not just an environmental priority but a matter of survival.
Maldives’ Commitment to Renewable Energy
President Muizzu emphasised the strides the Maldives has made in renewable energy, particularly in solar power initiatives, while noting the country’s ambitious target of generating 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. The President acknowledged the Energy Act and the roadmap for the energy sector as critical frameworks for achieving this vision, ensuring an energy supply that is reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable.
The President commended the private sector for its investments in renewable energy projects, recognising its vital role in fostering energy security and economic resilience. He also extended gratitude to international financing partners, whose support has been instrumental in bringing clean energy projects to fruition.
Global Significance and Local Impact
Clean energy adoption is a critical global goal as countries strive to meet international climate targets such as the Paris Agreement. For Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives, the stakes are particularly high. The country’s leadership in clean energy is not only a national imperative but also a powerful example for other nations to follow.
President Muizzu called for increased international support for SIDS in their clean energy transitions, acknowledging the challenges smaller economies face in securing sustainable energy solutions. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to fostering a healthier environment and setting a global example in clean energy adoption.
As the Maldives continues to advance its renewable energy targets, the President’s message reflects the urgency of accelerating clean energy transitions globally. The International Day of Clean Energy serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to protect the planet and the crucial role nations like the Maldives play in this endeavour.
