Re-Employment Bill Ratified, Enabling Public Service Careers Up to Age 75

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Re-Employment Bill, fulfilling a key pledge to allow State employees to continue working in the public service up to the age of 75.

The Bill was passed by the People’s Majlis during its first extraordinary session on Monday, 5 January 2026, convened outside the legislature’s ordinary sittings.

The legislation establishes a legal framework for the re-employment of public service employees beyond the current pensionable age of 65. It sets out eligibility criteria and procedural requirements under the re-employment policy.

The Bill applies to individuals who are currently employed, or have previously been employed, in the public service, with the exception of members of the armed forces, police, judges, and persons appointed under the Constitution or other laws.

Under the new provisions, State employees may continue in service beyond 65, up to a maximum of 75 years. It also allows for the re-employment of individuals who were required to retire upon reaching 65 within the seven years preceding the Bill’s entry into force.

The Re-Employment Bill will come into effect within 30 days of its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette, enabling eligible employees to extend their careers in the public sector.
