The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has announced the completion of road condition assessments for Male’ City and Villimale’. Conducted by a Chinese government-appointed expert team in collaboration with the ministry’s technical team, the assessment marks the initial phase of a comprehensive road development initiative funded by grants from the Chinese government.
This project follows an agreement signed between the Maldives and China during the official visit of the Maldivian President to China on 23 July. The initiative aims to improve city infrastructure, including road paving, enhancements to water and sewerage systems, electrical networks, storm water management, and fire hydrant installation.
The assessments began on 5 November, with the joint teams performing a feasibility study of road conditions in both Male’ and Villimale’. The findings will guide the next phase of the project, which involves designing modern upgrades to the roads. The primary goal is to address deteriorating conditions and raise infrastructure to contemporary standards, providing significant benefits to the public.
The government estimates that this developmental initiative will take three to four years to complete, promising long-term improvements to the quality of life for residents of Male’ and Villimale’.
