The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that its sea-to-air cargo service at Velana International Airport (VIA) has successfully facilitated the transport of 1,000 tons of goods. This logistics initiative, designed to expedite and secure the delivery of cargo received via sea, has seen growing interest, with Virgin Atlantic becoming the latest airline to join the service.
With Virgin Atlantic’s participation, the sea-to-air service now operates in partnership with 12 airlines, demonstrating its rapid expansion since its launch. MACL stated that the inclusion of more airlines highlights the service’s success and the growing demand for this logistics solution. Among the key commodities transported are garments imported from Bangladesh to the Maldives, which are then distributed globally through the air cargo network.
The sea-to-air service is a collaborative effort between MACL and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). It integrates VIA into the global cargo connectivity chain, enhancing the Maldives’ position in international logistics. MACL emphasised that this service is a testament to its commitment to supporting the Maldives’ economy while adhering to international standards for safety and security.
The recently opened cargo terminal at VIA has played a crucial role in supporting the sea-to-air service. With state-of-the-art facilities, the terminal is equipped to handle the demands of this innovative logistics model, ensuring efficiency and reliability in the transportation of goods.
MACL reaffirmed its dedication to providing services that meet international best practices, further positioning the Maldives as a key player in regional and global cargo logistics. The continued success of the sea-to-air initiative underscores VIA’s growing importance in connecting global markets and supporting economic growth in the Maldives.
