The government has awarded a contract worth MVR 126.36 million to develop a new market complex on the site of the existing local market in Malé, as part of efforts to redevelop and reorganise the capital’s market area.

The project has been awarded to TrustEng Maldives Pvt Ltd. The agreement was signed by Mohamed Shamil, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, and Mohamed Abdul Hadi, Managing Director of TrustEng Maldives.

Plans for the project include a six-storey building designed to accommodate several markets currently operating in the area. According to the government, the complex will bring together the local market, fish market and tourist market within a single facility.

The building will include basement parking with space for more than 400 motorcycles. The ground floor will be designated for fish market activities and will contain 110 stainless steel kiosks and vendor areas. A five-tonne ice plant will also be installed on this level to produce ice for fish vendors.

Vegetable market operations will be located on the first, second and third floors. Each floor will feature 115 vendor kiosks intended for produce sellers.

The terrace level will include a food court, while the entire structure will provide a total usable floor area of 95,032.32 square feet.

According to the government, the project is expected to modernise the market area and improve convenience for both vendors and customers once completed. Construction of the complex is scheduled to be finished within one year and eight months.
