STELCO Aims to Complete Smart Meter Rollout by End of September

State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced that it expects to complete the rollout of smart meters by the end of September, replacing all existing analogue electricity meters. The initiative is part of a broader smart grid modernisation project launched in August last year.

The utility company is in the final stages of preparation for the deployment of smart meters, alongside the launch of a new mobile application designed to enhance user experience and energy management. Once in place, the smart system will allow customers to track their electricity usage in real time, with insights available on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis.

The upcoming mobile app will also offer features such as consolidated bill payments and direct communication channels with STELCO staff. The shift to smart meters is expected to empower consumers to adopt energy-saving habits, with greater visibility into their consumption patterns.

STELCO’s smart grid project aims to modernise electricity distribution across the Maldives, improve efficiency, and address public concerns about inaccurate or inflated utility bills. The full transition to smart meters marks a significant step forward in the company’s digital transformation agenda.
