The State Electric Company (STELCO) has successfully planted more than 36,000 trees in the three months since launching its ambitious initiative to plant 500,000 trees over the next five years.
The project, which commenced on 5 June to mark World Environment Day, involves tree planting activities across all 33 islands where STELCO operates. By 30 September, the company had reported a total of 36,825 trees planted, leaving 463,175 trees to meet its five-year target.
STELCO’s Managing Director, Hassan Fahmy, highlighted the company’s progress and reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative, stating: “Since the programme began in June 2024, we have consistently met our target of planting approximately 9,200 trees per month. At this pace, we are confident that we will reach our goal of 500,000 trees within 60 months.”
Fahmy also emphasised the lasting environmental benefits of the project, thanking STELCO staff, local councils, and community members for their support in making the initiative a success.
The project will focus on planting 90 different species of trees, many of which are endangered in the Maldives, contributing to the preservation of the country’s biodiversity.
