STELCO Prepares Meter Readings Ahead of Ramadan Electricity Bill Cap

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) will conduct electricity meter readings this week in preparation for the government’s plan to cap domestic electricity bills during Ramadan.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced three months ago that electricity charges at the domestic rate during the fasting month will not exceed MVR 400, with any amount above the threshold discounted. The measure was first unveiled at a Progressive National Congress (PNC) rally last November, marking the government’s second anniversary.

STELCO has scheduled the meter readings for Monday and Tuesday to issue separate bills for Ramadan and has requested the cooperation of customers to facilitate the process.

The government implemented a similar concession last year, providing electricity discounts during the fasting month. President Muizzu has pledged to continue offering reductions on both electricity and water bills during Ramadan. Last year, the total value of electricity bill discounts reached approximately MVR 140 million.
