Tourism Ministry Distances Itself from State Minister’s Controversial Remarks

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the suspension of State Minister Mohamed Nihad following contentious comments made during a People’s National Congress (PNC) rally. The remarks, which accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of planning a terrorist attack targeting resorts, have been met with widespread criticism.

Nihad alleged that the opposition, with support from unions, was orchestrating an attack aimed at undermining the Maldives’ anticipated milestone of welcoming two million tourists this year. His claims included accusations against opposition MP Mauroof Zakir, a known advocate for tourism workers’ rights, of being involved in the alleged conspiracy.

The Ministry of Tourism, in a press release issued on Tuesday, clarified that Nihad’s statements do not reflect the government’s position and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to maintaining its reputation as a safe and secure destination for all visitors. The Ministry further emphasised that Nihad’s suspension is effective immediately, pending further review.

Government Reassures Safety and Stability

The Tourism Ministry highlighted the significant achievements of the sector this year, including record-breaking daily and monthly arrivals, showcasing the resilience of the Maldives as a global tourism hub. As the country nears the milestone of two million arrivals, the Ministry assured visitors that the Maldives remains a peaceful and welcoming destination.

The statement also underlined the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure environment for tourists, workers, and businesses, noting that such irresponsible rhetoric could harm the nation’s economy and international standing.

Opposition Denounces Allegations

The MDP has categorically denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and damaging. The party expressed concern over the potential impact of such remarks on the Maldives’ image as a premier travel destination, calling for swift government action to address the situation.

The MDP noted that similar inflammatory statements by government officials earlier this year had already led to financial losses in the tourism sector. They called for measures to safeguard the industry’s stability and to prevent unfounded claims from eroding confidence in the Maldives’ tourism offerings.

Fallout and Industry Impact

Nihad’s suspension marks a significant step by the government to distance itself from the controversy and mitigate potential damage. However, the allegations have raised concerns about the broader implications for the tourism sector, which serves as a critical pillar of the Maldivian economy.

As the situation unfolds, the government’s handling of the issue will likely come under scrutiny, with industry stakeholders and the international community closely observing how the Maldives addresses these challenges while safeguarding its reputation as a leading tourist destination.
