In a recent update issued by the Maldives Customs Service, new regulations on the importation of tobacco products by travellers on tourist visas have come into effect as of 9th November 2024. These revisions, aligned with the latest amendment to the “Regulation on Packaging and Labelling of Tobacco Products,” specify the allowable quantities for duty-exempt tobacco imports.
According to the circular, tourists can now bring in limited quantities of tobacco for personal use without incurring customs duties. The permissible amounts are capped at 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 250 grams of loose tobacco. Items exceeding these thresholds will be held by Customs for up to 30 days, with travellers given the option to reclaim them at the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA) before leaving the country.
Furthermore, the guidelines emphasise that non-tourist travellers are required to comply with labelling standards set by the Ministry of Health. Tobacco products failing to meet these requirements are subject to confiscation upon entry.
Travellers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these updated guidelines to avoid any inconvenience during their journey to the Maldives.
