The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced that four-wheeled vehicles can now only be imported into the Maldives with a special permit, effective from 13 July. This change follows the amendment and implementation of updated regulations governing vehicle imports.
According to the ministry, the permit system has resumed after a five-year suspension, during which no new permits were issued. The new system requires applicants to verify that the imported vehicle has a designated parking space on private land. Applications without proof of an appropriate garage or parking space will not be approved.
The ministry stated that unlike the previous system, where permits were granted without confirmation of parking arrangements, the new regulations involve a verification process. Only after ensuring that the proposed space is suitable, such as a private garage or land, will a permit be issued. Public roads cannot be designated for vehicle parking under the new system.
This regulation is intended to address road safety concerns and prevent unregulated parking, particularly in congested areas. While the requirement for garage permits was originally introduced in April 2013 under the Road Vehicle Registration Rules, the new changes are aimed at strengthening compliance and ensuring more effective regulation of vehicle imports.
Permits will be issued within five working days, provided that all required documents and information are submitted correctly. The ministry has made the application process available online via its portal, with forms accessible on its website and at its reception desk.
