Velana International Airport has reached a 60-year milestone, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) organising a series of internal events to mark the anniversary and recognise staff contributions yesterday.
The day’s programme began with a flag-hoisting ceremony near Terminal 1, led by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed alongside Deputy Managing Director Mujthaba Latheef. Senior management, including Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Lam’aan, and employees were in attendance. A commemorative cake-cutting followed the ceremony.
Throughout the day, members of the company’s leadership team visited various departments to meet employees and convey appreciation for their work.
The anniversary programme concluded with an evening gathering, where MACL presented awards linked to its internal anniversary activities. This included recognition for the winning entry in the anniversary logo design competition and the top-performing department in an inter-departmental decoration initiative.
The anniversary reflects the airport’s six decades of operations, during which it has remained central to the Maldives’ connectivity and tourism sector.
