In a series of high-profile engagements at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Samoa, Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef highlighted the Maldives’ dedication to sustainable development and democratic governance. Representing the Maldives at multiple events, the Vice President reiterated the nation’s commitment to both climate action and democratic principles.
At the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s CEO-Leader’s Event, a prominent session at the CHOGM Business Forum, Vice President Latheef stressed the importance of fostering public-private partnerships (PPPs) to drive innovation and sustainable management in the Maldives. Addressing a focused group discussion on nature-based solutions, he shared that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places a strong priority on the private sector’s role in addressing pressing environmental challenges. The Vice President explained how PPPs offer a valuable avenue for mobilising private sector resources and technical expertise, complementing the government’s efforts to address climate change and environmental concerns.
The event was attended by Commonwealth leaders and business executives, with His Majesty King Charles III, the Head of the Commonwealth, also present. His Majesty founded the Sustainable Markets Initiative to promote eco-friendly practices, supporting sustainable business practices worldwide.
In a separate address during the Executive Session at CHOGM, Vice President Latheef emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance. He highlighted the nation’s progress, citing the successful completion of multiple cycles of free and fair elections in presidential, parliamentary, and local government realms. Reaffirming the nation’s dedication to core democratic values, he spoke of democracy, human rights, and tolerance as vital foundations of a thriving society.
Acknowledging the Commonwealth Secretariat’s ongoing support, particularly in election observation, the Vice President expressed his gratitude and recommended an enhanced Commonwealth approach for supporting electoral integrity. His suggestions included expediting election observation reports, providing technical assistance, and developing a comprehensive framework to support the entire election cycle.
As leader of the Maldives delegation to CHOGM 2024, Vice President Latheef reinforced the government’s commitment to collaborative governance, both within the Commonwealth and beyond, aiming to build a stronger democratic foundation and sustainable future for the Maldives.
