The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Social and Family Development to offer employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities and those living in poverty, identified under the government’s nationwide social outreach initiative ‘Haalu Kihineh?’.
The partnership will focus on matching job seekers from vulnerable backgrounds with suitable roles within WAMCO. The Ministry will be responsible for ensuring that individuals with disabilities are assigned duties in line with their physical capabilities, while those facing financial hardship will be placed in roles appropriate to their skills and qualifications.
The agreement is part of a broader effort to reduce dependency on welfare, offering meaningful employment and dignity to those in need. The Ministry has said this collaboration will also contribute to building a more resilient and inclusive society.
The ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme, which began in Hulhumalé in May last year, involves door-to-door visits across the country to assess the well-being of citizens and connect those requiring assistance with relevant government services. So far, officials have visited over 10,000 households in Hulhumalé and 14 atolls.
Conducted in cooperation with public service institutions, local councils, and Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), the programme seeks to reach every household in the Maldives within a year. It is aligned with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision of fostering a compassionate society by strengthening government-citizen trust and ensuring no one is left behind.
