The Maldives Zakat House has collected over MVR 4.5 million (USD 290,000) in Fitr Zakat donations during the first twenty days of Ramadan.
Fitr Zakat, an obligatory charitable contribution for Muslims during Ramadan, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and ensures a minimum level of provision for the less fortunate members of society.
The Zakat House released statistics on Wednesday revealing a total of MVR 4,499,433 (USD 291,792.47) has been received thus far. Fitr Zakat began being accepted on March 11th, with the Zakat House previously reporting MVR 1.6 million (USD 103,000) in the first ten days of Ramadan.
Multiple payment options are available to facilitate donations. Individuals can contribute Fitr Zakat online until next Saturday or utilize Bandeyri Pay until the last day of Ramadan. For those who wish to give in person, arrangements have been made at the hall of the Islamic Centre daily (except Fridays) between 11:00 hrs and 14:00 hrs. Additionally, Island Councils accept Zakat payments.
Those wishing to fulfil their Zakat obligations with staple goods can do so until the end of next Tuesday. Donations of staples will be accepted at the hall of Aminiya School on weekdays between 13:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs, with extended hours from 13:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs on Tuesday.
