Ministry of Economic Development has contracted foreign firm to provide consultancy for the development of international transshipment port facilities in Maldives.
The project was awarded for MVR 13.2 million to a joint venture between Maritime and Transport Business (MTBS) of Netherlands and Niras of Denmark.
Under the agreement, the foreign firm is to conduct feasibility assessments to develop transshipment port facilities in the southern region of Laamu Atoll and Ihavandhippolhu (administratively the northern tip of Haa Alif Atoll). Furthermore, the company will undertake surveys and assessments on how to proceed with the project.
MTBS has also been tasked with conducting feasibility assessments of the international port to be developed in Addu, Hithadhoo.
Speaking after the ceremony, State Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Iyad Hameed said that the construction of transshipment port would strengthen the economic sector of the country.
