Dhiraagu, in collaboration with Women in Tech Maldives, has launched the ‘Girls to Code’ programme in HA. Dhidhdhoo. This initiative, aimed at empowering young girls by teaching them essential coding skills, began on 8 July 2024 and will run until September 2024.
The ‘Girls to Code’ programme is specifically designed for girls aged 10 to 13 years and focuses on providing them with practical skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The goal is to inspire and empower young girls to enter technology fields, thereby addressing the gender gap in the industry. Participants, regardless of their prior coding experience, will receive hands-on practice and learn to create simple websites by the end of the programme.
Bishaara Hameed, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Dhiraagu, emphasised the importance of inclusion and the empowerment of women during the programme’s opening ceremony. “Through this initiative, we aim to provide girls from HA. Dhidhdhoo with essential coding skills and boost their confidence. We hope to inspire a new generation of female leaders who can bridge the gender gap and contribute to a more inclusive and dynamic industry,” she stated.
Mariyam Asna Saeed, President of Women in Tech Maldives, highlighted the broader impact of the programme. “This programme is more than just learning to code; it’s about empowering you to create, innovate, and learn crucial digital skills for the 21st century,” she said.
‘Girls to Code’ is a series of educational programmes introduced by Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives, focusing on various regions across the Maldives. The Dhidhdhoo edition is the fifth in the series, following the successful implementation in Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo, Kulhudhuffushi, and Laamu. The programme not only equips young girls with essential digital skills but also raises awareness and advocates for gender equality in technology, providing participants with the confidence and inspiration to succeed in the 21st century.
This joint initiative by Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives underscores their commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable technology sector in the Maldives.
