Air Arabia, recognised as the Middle East and North Africa’s premier low-cost carrier, has commenced its first non-stop service between Sharjah International Airport and Velana International Airport in Malé. The daily flights, inaugurated on 27 October 2024, offer a new gateway for travellers seeking affordable travel options to the Maldives.
The inaugural flight was celebrated with dual ceremonies at both Sharjah and Malé, attended by high-ranking officials from Air Arabia and airport authorities. Upon landing at Velana International Airport, the aircraft received a traditional water cannon salute, followed by a welcome ceremony that marked the beginning of this route.
Adel Al Ali, Group CEO of Air Arabia, expressed enthusiasm for this new addition to the airline’s expanding network. He noted, “The inaugural flight to the Maldives represents an exciting new chapter in our network expansion. We are excited to offer our customers direct access to this tropical paradise, reaffirming our commitment to affordable and value-driven air travel.”
Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), echoed this sentiment. He highlighted the significance of the route in strengthening the Maldives’ connections within the Middle Eastern market and extending access to global destinations. “The direct connection to Sharjah will boost arrivals from the Middle Eastern market and broaden connections to numerous cities worldwide, strengthening VIA’s position in regional and global aviation with each new route,” he stated.
The flight schedule consists of a morning departure from Sharjah at 08:00, arriving in Malé at 13:20, with the return journey departing from Malé at 14:20, landing in Sharjah at 17:55. Operated on Airbus A320 aircraft, the service includes onboard amenities such as ‘SkyTime,’ a free in-flight streaming option, and ‘SkyCafe,’ providing passengers with affordable meal options. Furthermore, passengers can benefit from Air Arabia’s loyalty programme, ‘Air Rewards,’ which allows earning and redeeming points.
Bookings for the new route can be made via Air Arabia’s official website, call centres, or travel agencies.
