Maldivian is preparing to introduce direct flights between the Maldives and Melbourne, marking the first time the national airline will operate a route to Australia. The service is expected to expand the country’s long-haul connectivity and provide a direct link to one of its emerging tourism markets.
According to Island Aviation Services Limited, the inaugural flight is scheduled to depart the Maldives on 17 May, with the return leg set for 19 May. The airline plans to operate the route on a weekly basis, with adjustments to frequency to be considered depending on passenger demand.
The development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 19 March aimed at establishing direct air connectivity between the Maldives and Australia. The agreement was signed by Maldives Civil Aviation Authority Chairman Abdul Haris and Australia’s Assistant Secretary for International Aviation, Jim Wolf.
Authorities have indicated that the new route aligns with broader efforts to strengthen bilateral air service arrangements and widen the Maldives’ international aviation network.
Tourism data suggests a gradual increase in arrivals from Australia. A total of 6,526 Australian visitors travelled to the Maldives during the first two months of the year, reflecting a 1.4 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2025.
