Tourist arrivals to the Maldives during the first half of November 2024 have seen a significant increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism. Between 1st and 16th November 2024, the country welcomed 92,166 visitors, marking a 7.5% increase from the 85,736 arrivals recorded during the same timeframe in 2023.
Year-on-Year Comparison and Key Insights
The steady growth in arrivals reflects the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to attract international tourists, even amid global economic uncertainties. The data indicates that the tourism sector continues to recover robustly, building on the gains achieved in previous months.
Total tourist arrivals for the year, as of 16th November 2024, have reached 1,756,814 visitors, compared to 1,605,925 during the same period in 2023. This represents an overall growth rate of 9.4%. The increased influx of visitors highlights the Maldives’ appeal as a top destination, supported by expanded marketing efforts and improved connectivity.
Shift in Market Dynamics
While the Maldives has traditionally relied on key markets like India, China, and Russia, the latest data suggests a diversification in tourist sources. This year, the government has also focused on attracting visitors from emerging markets, which has contributed to the year-on-year growth in arrivals.
Tourism Infrastructure and Accommodation
As of mid-November 2024, the Maldives boasts a total operational bed capacity of 64,836, with resorts accounting for the largest share. The data shows that 182 resorts, 14 hotels, 903 guesthouses, and 154 safari vessels are currently in operation, supporting the rising number of tourists. This expansion in accommodation options is expected to further boost the tourism sector.
The Maldives’ tourism industry continues to demonstrate resilience, with projections indicating a strong finish for 2024. The opening of new resorts and enhanced promotional campaigns are anticipated to sustain this growth momentum. The government remains focused on achieving its ambitious targets for the year, with the aim of surpassing the 2023 figures and setting new benchmarks for the industry.
The positive performance in the first half of November highlights the Maldives’ position as a preferred travel destination, bolstered by its natural beauty, high-end resorts, and efforts to ensure a safe travel environment.
