President Muizzu Meets Fishermen to Address Industry Challenges

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu convened a meeting with fishermen at the President’s Office yesterday to address pressing challenges within the fishing industry. Representatives from the fishing community highlighted concerns such as low fish prices, difficulties in securing fuel and financing, and obstacles in offloading their catch. They also urged the continuation of initiatives aligned with the President’s commitments to advance the sector.

The fishermen proposed leveraging modern technology to enhance the industry, focusing on expanding markets and improving fish quality. President Muizzu assured attendees of the government’s dedication to collaborating with the fishing community to tackle these issues, emphasizing prompt and serious consideration of the matters raised. He also expressed intent to hold such consultative meetings more regularly.

Since assuming office, President Muizzu has engaged actively with the fishing community. In September 2024, he met with the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU), a collective of yellowfin tuna fishermen, affirming that implementing the administration’s manifesto would address industry challenges. The BKMU members welcomed the decision to halt plans for reopening longline fishing, which they believed would have allowed large foreign fisheries companies to dominate the sector and crowd out local fishermen.

However, recent reports indicate growing dissatisfaction among fishermen, who accuse the current administration of neglecting the industry more than any previous government. They cite reduced fish prices and delays in payments, with some stating that within 52 weeks of the Muizzu administration, the price of fish has dropped to MVR 14, and the promised payments in dollars within 48 hours have not been provided, even in MVR.

The evolving relationship between the government and the fishing community reflects ongoing efforts to address industry concerns. The administration’s commitment to regular dialogue and responsive action is crucial in navigating these challenges and ensuring the sustainable development of the Maldives’ fishing sector.
