Efforts Underway to Redesign Kadhdhoo Airport Expansion Amid Challenges

Efforts to upgrade Kadhdhoo Airport in Laamu Atoll are progressing as authorities work to address design challenges and secure funding, according to Ahmed Mubeen, Managing Director of Regional Airports.

The project, awarded to the Chinese firm CAMC in April, aims to bring the airport to international standards in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to revitalise the Maldives’ first domestic airport, inaugurated in December 1986.

Speaking on state media, Mubeen revealed that the airport’s redevelopment plans required significant adjustments after identifying several issues. Among these is the encroachment of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) building into the proposed expansion area.

“The runway and the new passenger terminal building works are underway, but part of the MNDF’s main building overlaps with the expanded area,” Mubeen said. “We are exploring ways to address this, working on three or four design options to ensure the best long-term outcome.”

The redesign is being carried out in collaboration with relevant authorities to balance operational requirements with the need for sustainability.

Beyond physical improvements, the project also focuses on commercial opportunities in the area. Mubeen highlighted that potential trade and economic benefits are being assessed and will be submitted to the Economic Council for review.

The upgrade is expected to contribute significantly to the region’s economy by adding 5,000 beds to the local tourism sector. The ultimate goal, according to Mubeen, is to make Kadhdhoo Airport a profitable venture while ensuring it serves as a sustainable hub for the region.

Kadhdhoo Airport, inaugurated in 1986 as the Maldives’ first domestic airport, has long been a subject of public concern due to its lack of modernisation under successive administrations. This redevelopment project represents a crucial step towards addressing those issues and enhancing the airport’s capacity to support both tourism and regional connectivity.

The Kadhdhoo Airport project remains a priority under the current administration, with ongoing efforts to ensure that the development aligns with the region’s economic and infrastructural needs.
