President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) as construction nears completion. Accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, officials from the President’s Office, and other senior government representatives, the President toured key areas of the facility and received updates on its progress.
The delegation was welcomed by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), along with Deputy Managing Directors Mujthaba Latheef and Mohamed Lamaan, and other senior officials.
The new terminal is set to open in October, marking a significant step forward in the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure. Designed to accommodate seven million passengers annually, the terminal is expected to ease congestion and improve the overall travel experience at VIA.
Spanning 72,000 square meters, the terminal features design elements inspired by the Maldivian landscape, including terrazzo flooring resembling the sea, wave-like ceiling patterns, and natural motifs on the walls. The facility will include 47 check-in counters, six self-service kiosks, a modern baggage handling system, and advanced security screening.
With construction nearing completion, MACL remains committed to delivering a modern, world-class terminal that enhances operational efficiency while reflecting the Maldives’ dedication to providing exceptional service.
