The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, arrived in the Republic of Malta on Monday for an official visit aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between the two island nations.
During the visit, Minister Khaleel met with Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg. The two officials discussed several areas of mutual interest, including tourism, fisheries, education, and broader development priorities. The visit also included meetings with key members of the Maltese Cabinet, where discussions covered environmental conservation, renewable energy transition, and trade.
The talks highlighted the parallels between the Maldives and Malta—both small island nations facing similar developmental and climate-related challenges. The meetings reflected a shared understanding of the importance of international partnerships to address global issues such as regional security, climate resilience, and economic sustainability.
Malta and the Maldives also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), recognising the value of cooperation in multilateral platforms and regional forums. The official visit underscores both countries’ interest in strengthening existing ties while creating new opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
