Rasmale’ Project Reclaims 101 Hectares as Work Continues

The landmark Rasmale’ Project is advancing steadily, with 101 hectares of land reclaimed so far, according to an update provided by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Sunday.

The project, which involves the reclamation of a total of 1,009 hectares, has been divided into a dozen sections. Practical work officially began on 18 December 2023. Although the initial government plan aimed to complete land reclamation within ten months, adjustments have since been made following unforeseen challenges that caused delays.

HDC awarded the dredging works for four of the sections to Mohan Mutha Exports Private Limited and China Railway Construction Corporation. As of 13 April, 101 hectares had been reclaimed across these sections, where a total of 378 hectares is scheduled for reclamation.

HDC also confirmed that shore protection works for the newly reclaimed land are set to commence in the coming days.

The Rasmale’ Project is part of a broader plan to address the country’s housing needs, with the aim of providing 65,000 housing units. It has also been presented as a step towards environmental sustainability, with the development designed to become the first zero-carbon city in the Indian Ocean region.

The government has described Rasmale’ as a project intended to drive technological and environmental transformation. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the development is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s housing capacity and environmental goals.
