According to a joint press release issued by both parties, the project will be implemented in multiple phases. These will include expanding the harbour’s capacity and upgrading cargo handling facilities. The storage hub will also include dedicated infrastructure for storing perishable goods, the statement confirmed.

This initiative marks the first step towards establishing a sea route for transporting goods from the north of the country to the south on a regular schedule. The Ministry stated that the government aims to strengthen the economy by developing an efficient supply chain within the atolls, which would also help reduce the cost of imported goods.
