Maldives Joins Global Climate Push with New Energy Targets and Blue Planet Alliance Pact

The Maldives has strengthened its global climate engagement with a renewed focus on energy transition and international cooperation, marked by three major developments during Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef’s recent visit to Honolulu, Hawaii.

Participating as a special guest at the opening ceremony of the Blue Planet Alliance (BPA) Fellowship Programme, the Vice President addressed key challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and outlined the Maldives’ latest initiatives in renewable energy. The Fellowship, held from May 19 to 23, brought together participants from government bodies, civil society, and utility providers, offering a platform to collaborate on clean energy solutions tailored to island contexts.

During the event, the Government of Maldives signed a non-binding climate agreement with the Blue Planet Alliance, formalising its membership in the organisation. The Blue Planet Climate Agreement recognises the Maldives’ renewable energy ambitions and sets the foundation for future cooperation, with support from the international community to help meet the country’s sustainability goals.

The Vice President also presented the Maldives’ newly launched Energy Roadmap 2024–2033, which sets a target to generate 33 per cent of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. This target, alongside the Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), signals a strategic shift in national energy planning, aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Framing the energy transition as both a necessity and an opportunity, the Maldives has positioned itself as a contributor to international climate discourse. Its participation in the BPA Fellowship Programme underscores the country’s broader commitment to sharing knowledge, advancing innovative policies, and building coalitions that address the specific needs of island nations on the climate frontline.
