Maldives Courts UK Investors with New Reforms and Sectoral Opportunities

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu participated in the Maldives–UK Business Forum 2025 in London, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen trade and investment ties with the United Kingdom. This marked the eighth edition of the forum, which was organised by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

The event brought together UK corporate leaders, institutional partners, and senior Maldivian officials, reinforcing both nations’ interest in deepening economic cooperation. During his remarks, President Muizzu presented a vision for attracting UK investors across five sectors identified as strategic for national development: the creative economy, digital transformation, renewable energy, fisheries and ocean innovation, and tourism infrastructure.

He also introduced a new fisheries promotion initiative under the brand “From Maldives,” designed to support the country’s push for international recognition of its sustainably sourced fish products. The launch forms part of broader efforts to diversify the Maldivian export portfolio and add value to its fisheries sector.

The forum included a panel discussion on “Investing in the Future,” which enabled dialogue between UK businesses and the Maldivian delegation. Topics explored included investment incentives, legal reforms, and partnership opportunities in sectors such as waste management and finance.

In a key outcome, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the West London Chambers of Commerce, aimed at facilitating long-term institutional collaboration and expanding bilateral business linkages.

The forum also featured contributions from Lord Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, who noted the Maldives’ strong investment narrative and commitment to reform.

President Muizzu’s remarks included reference to planned legal changes, including a new Foreign Investment Act and renewed focus on Special Economic Zones, which he said would play a central role in enhancing the Maldives’ competitiveness as an investment destination.
