The Maldives and the United Kingdom have discussed further strengthening defence cooperation, as the government continues efforts to build the capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force.
The discussions were held during a meeting between Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed and British High Commissioner Nicholas David Low.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed ways to further improve bilateral relations, including cooperation in the defence sector. Minister Hassan Rasheed also thanked the UK for its support in strengthening the Maldives’ defence capabilities.
The government has stated that increasing the operational capacity of the MNDF remains a priority. The MNDF currently conducts various training programmes with partner countries, including the United Kingdom.
Defence cooperation between the Maldives and international partners has remained an important part of efforts to support maritime security, training, and institutional capacity within the country’s security services.
