India-Maldives Ties in Focus During Prime Minister Modi’s State Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will undertake a State Visit to the Maldives from 25 to 26 July 2025, at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, with Prime Minister Modi confirmed as the Guest of Honour at the official celebrations on 26 July.

According to a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on 20 July, this will be Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and the first by a Head of State or Government during President Muizzu’s tenure. The visit is expected to include high-level talks between President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi, focusing on issues of mutual interest and regional cooperation.

The two leaders will also take stock of the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, a framework adopted during President Muizzu’s State Visit to India in October 2024. The partnership outlines cooperation across economic development, maritime security, infrastructure, and broader strategic collaboration in the Indian Ocean.

The EAM’s statement noted that the visit “reflects the importance India attaches to its maritime neighbour, Maldives,” highlighting the country’s continued significance in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.

Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Malé will follow an official visit to the United Kingdom from 23 to 24 July, where he is expected to hold discussions with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and call on His Majesty King Charles III.

The upcoming visit to the Maldives is viewed as an opportunity to further deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries. While the EAM’s statement projects continued engagement and support, attention will also be on how both sides navigate recent shifts in regional dynamics and align their strategic priorities in the months ahead.
