Tourist Arrivals in Early August Show Slower Growth Compared to Previous Months

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives in the first half of August reached 107,847, up 4.4 percent compared with the same period last year. The average daily arrival stood at 6,740, reflecting a steady but more modest increase than the double-digit growth recorded in most other months of 2025.

By 16 August, total arrivals for the year reached 1.4 million, a 9 percent rise from the same period in 2024. Resorts accommodated more than 1 million of these visitors, guesthouses hosted 306,840, while safari vessels received nearly 29,000.

China continues to dominate as the Maldives’ top source market, contributing over 215,000 tourists, or 15.4 percent of the total. Russia and the United Kingdom followed with 166,496 and 128,786 arrivals respectively, while Italy and Germany rounded out the top five. India remained in sixth place with close to 80,000 visitors.

So far this year, the tourism industry has largely been buoyed by double-digit growth: January recorded an 11.7 percent increase, April 17.8 percent, May 13.1 percent, June 15 percent, and July 11.5 percent. Only February and March slipped into negative and low single-digit territory, and August’s slower pace marks the third month in 2025 to fall short of double digits.

The total bed capacity across the Maldives stood at 64,233 by mid-August, spread across 1,240 operational facilities. Resorts contributed the lion’s share, with 43,483 beds, followed by guesthouses with 15,284.

While the overall trajectory remains positive, the latest data suggest a levelling off after months of strong expansion. With global markets still uncertain and seasonal patterns in play, the performance in the second half of August and the remainder of the year will be closely watched.
