The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has supplied more than 1,000 trees to four islands in Shaviyani Atoll under its Food Security Programme, part of broader efforts to strengthen food security across the Maldives.
According to the Ministry, a total of 1,159 plants were provided this month through its Hanimaadhoo centre in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The trees were distributed among households and offices in the four islands. Funadhoo received 324 trees, Lhaimagu 378, Narudhoo 254, and Bilehfahi 203.
The distribution included breadfruit, waterapple, moringa, and yam trees. Earlier this year, the Ministry also supplied 50 breadfruit trees to Hanimaadhoo Council under similar efforts.
Minister of Agriculture Dr Maryam Mariya said on social media that councils have been requesting support to improve food security in the atolls. She added that the Ministry remains focused on addressing the challenges posed by climate change and building sustainable food systems.
The government has announced plans to establish an agricultural economic zone as part of a wider push to reduce reliance on food imports and expand the local agriculture sector. The Ministry is also providing technical assistance to farmers to help increase domestic food production.
